Dog Safety Tips While At the Beach

Bringing the dog on boating or swimming trips allows dog owners to spend more quality time with their fuzzy friend. However, taking the dog along on such adventures requires a lot of preparation. There are some important things to consider ensuring the safety of the pet.

For convenience, here are some useful safety tips when planning to bring the dog to the beach:

  • When planning to go to the beach, be sure to have plenty of fresh water available for the dog. Dogs can easily be dehydrated due to the heat, so they need plety of water to replenish.

  • Dogs need a life jacket to stay afloat while in the water. Because not all dogs can swim, this gear is ideal to use to keep the pet safe at all times. A Dog Life Jacket is a great way to safely retrieve the pet if it falls overboard.

  • Give the dog a shaded area. Too much exposure to the sun can be harmful to the dog's health. Also, this is a good way to prevent immediate dehydration.

  • Doggles are a great solution to protect the dog's eyes against the ultraviolet rays of the sun.

  • Protect the dog's feet from the heat of boat surfaces. Provide a pad where it can comfortably stand while enjoying the scenery. Or might as well get them comfortable, cooling dog shoes to protect their paws from burning.

  • Walk the dog so it can get acquainted with the boat. In addition, this is a great way to let the dog get used to the movements that a boat makes.

  • Set a game for the dog so that it will not be afraid while in the water. Retrieving a toy is a good example of this. Of course, a Dog Life Jacket is a must to ensure their safety while doing the activity.

  • When selecting which toys to bring, be sure to choose toys that will float well.

  • Before heading out for a play date near the water, allow the dog to try on the life jacket. This will allow them to better acquainted with the device.

  • Make sure you have established a command to get your dog to come to you, such as calling the dog's name, “Come!”, or “Heel!” This way if your dog swims out of sight, you will be able to call them towards you.

  • Just as you would check the quality of a life jacket for human use, be sure to check your dog’s life jacket too. Check to see that all straps are secure and working properly.

  • Bring a separate towel just for drying your dog. After a fun filled day at the beach, you most likely do not want a wet dog in your car for the trip home.
